The end of the Irani Cup at the end of the season resembles a hastily assembled reception after a tiring wedding. It is a difficult question for any nursing team Surf Ranji victorious campaign to restore the clock to another championship game.
However, the advantage for the defending champions Karnataka could well be the know-how, having done that once last during the course of their historic treble season – saw a massive innings victory over Rest of India in the same place – and relentless search to perpetuate his legacy.
As captain of Karnataka Vinay Kumar said at the press conference after the match, Karnataka “want to win every game and not really think about tournaments.” One of his greatest strengths is the presence of a young, bunch together they have shared the same dressing room for a few years now. Robin Uthappa gave an idea of the thinking when he said: “It will be life after 16-17 guys if you say one thing for us.”
At the other end of the spectrum are the rest of the India side, usually a set of the best players in the country. There are some questionable inclusions in the team, however. Both Singh and B Aparajith Jiwanjot, scoring 553 in 29.10, they had a great season Ranji. Neither did captain Manoj Tiwary, but in their defense that led from the front with two performances games prizes such as East Zone lifted the title of Deodhar Trophy.
Tiwary, while acknowledging that there was “very little time to jell together,” said he personally knew most of the players, and I was sure he knew what was expected of them.
